If you are in Professor Fujita's HIST 151 or 152 class and need a book for your book review assignment, here are some pointers:
Go through the following steps, asking yourself the questions that follow each step:
- Review the chapters of your history textbook.
- Which chapter interests you the most? What is it about? Who are the notable people mentioned in the text?
- Conduct exploratory Google searches on people, places, or historical events and do some preliminary reading to gauge your interest level.
- Is it interesting enough that you would read an entire book about it?
When you have a topic selected, you are ready to begin searching for a book:
- Browse the books in the History section at the Library.*
- Search Primo, the library's book and article search tool, for more print and e-books.
- Use keywords in your searches. Type [your topic] + history to get started.
- Ask a librarian. They will ask a few questions to learn what history topics interest you and help guide you to resources.
- Call the Reference Desk at 808-455-0379 or use the online chat during library hours.
See our History LibGuide for more tips on selecting a topic to research.
*Note: Due to the renovation of the 3rd floor, most of the library's print books are in temporary storage. A small collection of print books is in the Main Floor General Collection. Additionally, more books, including e-books, can be found by searching Primo. Select All UH Libraries from the drop-down menu to find print books at other UH Libraries. To learn more about Primo, see our About Primo LibGuide.
